Hawaii Entry Requirements
Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States of America, so travellers should make sure they understand the entry requirements before their trip.
If you are travelling to Hawaii from Australia or New Zealand, you will need a valid passport and, in most cases, an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It is recommended that you apply for your ESTA well before your departure date, and at least 72 hours before travelling, to allow sufficient time for your application to be processed.
Canadian citizens generally do not need an ESTA when travelling to the United States as visitors, although different entry requirements may apply depending on your circumstances.

What to Pack
Packing List
On my first trip to Hawaii, I made the mistake of packing far too many clothes, only to discover that I wore just a handful of them! With Hawaii’s warm, tropical climate, you really don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe. Packing light will make travelling between the airport, hotel and activities much easier, and leave you with plenty of room for souvenirs and shopping.
For most of your trip, comfortable, lightweight clothing is ideal. Be sure to pack swimsuits, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts, a couple of casual dresses, casual pants, jeans, sandals, slippers (thongs/flip-flops), comfortable walking or tennis shoes, a light jacket and a hat. A light jacket or sweater is handy for cooler evenings, air-conditioned restaurants and higher-elevation areas.
If you happen to forget something, don’t worry! Hawaii has plenty of shopping options, including bargain stores such as Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls and TJ Maxx, where you can pick up clothing and other essentials at great prices. And if you’re planning to do some serious shopping while you’re there, you may want to pack light on the way over—you might just need to buy an extra suitcase for the trip home!

Money & Currency in Hawaii
The official currency in Hawaii is the United States dollar (USD). When travelling around the islands, it’s a good idea to carry a combination of cash and a credit or debit card, as most hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions accept cards.
I also recommend carrying some smaller denominations of cash, particularly $1 and $5 notes. These are handy for tipping hotel staff, small purchases and using local transportation. Having a few smaller notes on hand means you won’t have to worry about finding change when you need it.
ATMs are widely available throughout Hawaii, including at banks, hotels, shopping centres and grocery stores. Keep in mind that ATM operators and your own bank may charge fees for cash withdrawals, so it’s worth checking the fees before using an ATM. You may also want to withdraw a larger amount at once to reduce the number of transaction fees.
If you visit Hawaii regularly, you may be interested in exploring local banking options. Banks such as First Hawaiian Bank and other financial institutions operate throughout the islands. However, banking requirements can vary, so be sure to check directly with the bank about eligibility and the identification or documentation required before opening an account.

One of the many reasons Hawaii is such a popular holiday destination is its warm, tropical climate. With pleasant temperatures throughout the year, there really isn’t a bad time to visit the islands. Whether you’re planning a summer getaway or a winter escape, you can expect plenty of opportunities to enjoy Hawaii’s beautiful beaches and outdoor attractions.
During the summer months, daytime temperatures generally reach around 85°F (29°C), while winter temperatures average around 78°F (26°C). Ocean temperatures remain comfortable throughout the year, averaging approximately 74°F (23°C), making swimming and water activities enjoyable in every season.
December, January and February are generally the cooler months, while July, August and September tend to be warmer. Hawaii’s wetter season typically runs from November through March, although rain can occur at any time of year. Showers are often more common on the windward sides of the islands, while the leeward areas tend to be drier.
Hawaii’s hurricane season in the Central Pacific officially runs from June 1 through November 30. While tropical cyclones are relatively uncommon, they can occur outside of the official season as well. It’s always a good idea to check the latest weather forecasts before and during your trip.

Before you head out shopping, it’s worth signing up for free loyalty programs and checking for available offers—you could save quite a bit over the course of your trip.
Safeway – Safeway offers a free membership card that gives you access to weekly specials, member-only pricing and other discounts throughout the store.
Foodland – Foodland’s Maika'i membership program is another great way to save on groceries. You can sign up at checkout by providing your phone number. Members earn Maika'i points on eligible purchases, which can be redeemed for rewards and special offers. Check with Foodland for the latest program details and current rewards.
Longs Drugs – Longs Drugs offers a rewards program where members can access coupons, special offers and discounts. Signing up before you shop can be a great way to save on everyday essentials, toiletries and other holiday necessities.
Macy’s – International visitors may be eligible for a Macy’s International Visitor Savings Pass, which offers discounts on eligible purchases in selected departments.
